5/10/2023 0 Comments Candide novelThe Preceptor Pangloss was the oracle of the family, and little Candide heard his lessons with all the good faith of his age and character. The Baron’s son seemed to be in every respect worthy of his father. Her daughter Cunegonde was seventeen years of age, fresh-coloured, comely, plump, and desirable. The Baron’s lady weighed about three hundred and fifty pounds, and was therefore a person of great consideration, and she did the honors of the house with a dignity that commanded still greater respect. They called him “My Lord,” and laughed at all his stories. All the dogs of his farm-yards formed a pack of hounds at need his grooms were his huntsmen and the curate of the village was his grand almoner. His great hall, even, was hung with tapestry. The Baron was one of the most powerful lords in Westphalia, for his castle had not only a gate, but windows. Image from the Trier University Candide Database, courtesy of Hans-Ulrich Seifert. At that point, I would have happily joined the excited teens clutching books and eager to see Ms. I kind of dismissed it as fluff at the time, but was eventually persuaded by a co-worker to pick up the series a few years later (at another bookstore). I forget that these are people who enjoy escapist fiction for a reason). Having never heard of her, I was mildly amused to see dozens of teenage (and some post-teenage) girls pack in to see a mild-mannered middle age woman discuss a series of fantasy books she had written (I don’t know why, but I always expect fantasy authors to look more dramatic, or toned. Years ago when I was working at a bookstore as a cashier, I worked an in-store event where she appeared. In order, the books are: Alanna, In the Hands of the Goddess, The Woman Who Rides Like a Man, and Lioness Rampant. This is one of my old favourites – the Alanna quartet by Tamora Pierce. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Gron's Fated by V.C. LancasterFor example, in Transcendence by Shay Savage, the hero doesn’t have Wernicke’s area, which is the part of the brain responsible for processing language. One of them is when the characters can’t speak or understand the same language, and for some reason aren’t able to learn. There are certain plot devices that will immediately have me grabbing for a book. However, the next book Chasing Earthis already out and available on kindle unlimited so – unlike me – you won’t have to wait long to find out what happens next.įor more of my thoughts on the book, check out my review of Saving Askara. Warning though…it does end on a cliffhanger. This was a great story, beautifully told and I loved seeing Elizabeth and Aderus work together and see the respect and attraction grow between them. It made for an interesting clash with our heroine, a doctor who is thrust into the job of ambassador between humans and the Askara. War and violence are just a part of their lifestyle, so much so that they are almost on the brink of extinction. Saving Askara would definitely be part of the sub-genre, not only does the hero look a bit like Predator he also has, what I imagine, is a similar culture. I feel like there should be a subgenre of monster romance for all the heroes that have a striking resemblance to the Predator, you know – the alien in the film Predator that first graced our screens in the 80’s. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Goosebumps dummy bookNine books were released under the Goosebumps Collection title and were split into three groups: Living Dummy Collection, Campfire Collection, and Monster Blood Collection. If somebody stole something from me, I’d have known who it was, what kind of car he drove, and the numbers on his license plate before he was halfway to Southampton. Everybody knows everybody in my neighborhood, so strangers don’t go unnoticed. I never locked the door because we lived in a secluded colored neighborhood way back from the highway. “My house is your house,” I always said to Clarance and Ricky. We’d been friends since childhood, since my grandparents owned the house. I was surprised even to hear the doorbell because it was too early for my friends to have made it home from work and neither one of them would have rung the bell anyway. The three of us had a standing date to play cards on Thursday nights. I had answered the door expecting big Clarance Mayhew and his cousin Ricky. |
